The method involves automatically stopping and/or starting a traction combustion engine in a release mode of operation (1210). The traction combustion engine is not automatically stopped and/or started in a latch mode of operation (1220). A mode of operation is determined (1100) in dependence of status information (2110) of a mountain driving off assistant system. A request is controlled by individual stop and start of the traction combustion engine, where the request of the stop and start takes place as a function of operational parameters of the engine.
