Phenanthroline complex (I) is new. Phenanthroline complex of formula (I) is new. M : Mo or W; R 1-R 8H, 1-12C alkyl, 3-12C cycloalkyl, aryl with 6-18 atoms, heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms, 1-12C alkyloxy, 3-12C cycloalkyloxy, 6-20C aryloxy, di-1-4C alkylamino, halo or NO 2; R 9-R 11aryl with 6-18 atoms, heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms (both substituted with upto 5 1-12C alkyl, 1-12C alkoxy, di-1-4C alkylamino, 3-12C (cycloalkyl)oxy, aryl with 6-18 atoms, heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms or halo), 1-12C alkyl or 3-12C cycloalkyl; X : N or CR 12; and R 121-12C alkyl, 3-12C cycloalkyl, aryl with 6-18 atoms, heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms, preferably CH 3, ethyl, propyl, butyl, isopropyl, tert-butyl, trimethylsilylmethyl, benzyl, (dimethyl)(phenyl)methyl, phenyl, methylphenyl, dimethylphenyl, trimethylphenyl, methoxyphenyl, dimethoxyphenyl, fluorophenyl, pentafluorophenyl, trifluoromethylphenyl or furyl. Provided that at least one of the substituents R 9-R 11comprises an aryl with 6-18 atoms or a heteroaryl with 5-10 atoms.
