The apparatus has a lens (3) that is arranged in a frame (1) to expand a laser beam (4) emitted from a laser diode (2) such that laser beam (5) is produced. The cross-sectional area (A1) of the laser beam from the lens is larger than the cross-sectional area (a) of the laser beam emitted from the laser diode. A mirror (8) and an optical guide (9) are arranged behind the lens to expand laser beam (5). An independent claim is included for method for performing laser punching process using laser punching apparatus.
