The method involves treating a carbonaceous cathode material (8) in a reductive atmosphere with oxygen contained gas under heating on temperature within a range of 400 degree Celsius and below decomposition temperature of the cathode material such that carbon monoxide is separated to form cathode material, where the reductive atmosphere is carbon dioxide or water vapor atmosphere optionally in combination with inert gas i.e. noble gas. An independent claim is also included for a device for reducing carbon content in a cathode material of a lithium-containing battery.
