The device has a stationary guide plate (1) including an upper edge, where a slot (Schl) is formed between the plate and a side edge (5) of a continuous conveyor belt (2). The plate conveys postal items (Ps1-Ps5) falling through the slot into an accommodating container (3). A protective element (1.1) i.e. protective shield, is provided above the plate and flushingly attached at the upper edge of the plate. The protective element extends parallel to the side edge and includes an extension ranging between 30 cm and 100 cm when viewed in a direction parallel to the side edge.
