The apparatus (28) has a sensor device for determining ice formation in a sub region (18) of a structure (14) of a vehicle. A heating mechanism is provided for heating the sub region of the structure, where the sub region of the structure is provided with a coating for removal of the ice. The sub region of the structure comprises multiple structural elements for partitioning the sub region into multiple lower regions, where the structure is designed as structural awning (16). An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a protection apparatus for a sub region of a structure of a vehicle.
