Preparing a supported catalyst or its catalytically active composition, comprises: (a) providing a supported catalyst precursor or its composition; and (b) treating the supported catalyst precursor or its composition with a reaction mixture comprising at least one reducing agent that is capable of exchange of protons, and at least one oxidizing agent. Independent claims are included for: (1) use of a mixture comprising the reducing agent and the oxidizing agent for the treatment of supported catalyst precursor or its composition; and (2) the supported catalyst or its composition obtained by the above process.
