The method involves detecting objects (3) e.g. pedestrians, in the surrounding of a vehicle (1), and discriminating object types in the detected objects. Spacing is formed along Y-direction for all objects that are detected in the environment. The objects are classified as relevant if the spacing falls below predetermined threshold values (Y1-Y3) of spacing along Y-direction. The objects are provided at small distance to the vehicle along X-direction.
