The vehicle (1) has a longitudinal guiding system (2) e.g. adaptive cruise control (ACC) system, determining a distance to a forward-driving vehicle (4). A warning signal causing an action of a driver is output by the system or another vehicle-side provided driver assistance system when a warning threshold distance (dw) is determined. A signal output time and the threshold distance are changeable depending on brake behavior and/or reactivity of the driver based on information determined upon actuation of a brake pedal (7), where the threshold distance is changeable within a preset interval.
