A process for producing a regenerated tobacco material which comprises extracting a natural tobacco material with an aqueous extractant to obtain an extract containing components of the natural tobacco material and an extraction residue, subjecting the extract to adsorptive separation with an adsorbent to reduce the amount of nitrosamines, preparing a regenerated tobacco web from the extraction residue, and adding part or all of the extract reduced in nitrosamine content to the regenerated tobacco web. The adsorbent is a highly hydrophobic one. The adsorptive separation is accomplished in 60 minutes using a highly hydrophobic adsorbent in an amount corresponding to 10-110 wt.% of the amount of the soluble components contained in the extract.
