The apparatus has a sensor coupled with an engine to determine and transmit a speed signal. Another sensor e.g. torque sensor and dynamometer, determines and transmits an engine load signal. A processing device receives the signals and an inlet air pathway absolute air humidity signal from a third sensor. The device determines a value of a desired charge density for a combustion mixture as a function of the three signals. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a value indicative of a desired charge density for a combustion mixture for an engine.
