The mechanism has a guide rail i.e. lower guide rail (2), fixed with respect to a body of a motor vehicle. A carriage (9) connects a sliding side door (1) and the guide rail for guiding the sliding of the side door with respect to the guide rail. Another guide rail (10) is fixed with respect to the carriage for increasing total sliding travel of the side door towards its opening position. The side door slides with respect to the latter guide rail. The latter guide rail is extended between points (A, B), where one of the points is situated at certain distance from the rear of the other point.
