The atomic clock comprises a helium 3 plasma, as the middle of the measurement, which is brought to the state of plasma in order to exploit the metastable state of the material and the levels of the hyperfine structure, whose lifetime is long and which therefore allow a more easily than the excitations of the gas atoms.
