The installation (1) has a reception surface (6) for receiving wood logs or billets (3) with respect to a sawing/splitting type cutting device (5) to obtain cut and/or split billets. A detecting unit i.e. optoelectronic type distance sensor (7), automatically, directly or indirectly detects diameter of the wood logs/billets to be cut. A calculating unit (8) is associated to the detection unit to calculate volume of cut wood by considering the diameter and length (l) of each billet. An informing unit has a display screen (9) and a warning device (12), and informs the volume to an operator. An independent claim is also included for a method for automatically delivering information relating to volume of wood cut and/or split by a wood log or billet cutting installation.
