The system (2) has a detection unit (19) for detecting regenerative operation of a particulate filter, and a detection unit (20) for detecting a burst of exothermic reactions in the particulate filter during the regenerative operation. A control unit (21) controls a water injector (10) based on the detection of the burst. The detection unit (19) comprises a comparison unit for comparing functioning parameters such as engine rotation speed, of an internal combustion engine with stored threshold values. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a water injector situated in upstream of a particulate filter that is mounted on an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
