The method involves selecting a starting mode of a heat engine of a motor vehicle using a selection algorithm by a computer. Safety parameters for starting the engine are determined according to safety criteria for starting the engine, using a safety determination algorithm. Instruction for starting the engine is provided by the computer according to the selected starting mode when the safety parameters are determined. The selection and safety determination algorithms are calibrated based on startup elements of the engine.
