The method involves circulating sampled air in an air volume through a reversible capturing substrate that captures scented molecules from a target material. The substrate is overheated by controlling an electrical heating resistor arranged directly above the substrate so as to partially release the captured scented molecules. The released scented molecules are directed toward nose of an animal e.g. dog (52), trained for olfactory searching of odor of the target material. An independent claim is also included for an installation for detecting a target material comprising a sampling unit.
