Disclosed is a method or procedure for generating the boot command list for a smart phone or PDA type computing device. The procedure involves generating a merged command list containing the components from the various individual static command lists. The merged command list is then stored in non-volatile memory, and subsequently accessed on the next device start-up to control the launching or booting of the required software components. The merged command list may be generated on shut-down, when new software is added or updated, or can be when requested by the user. The method may store an indicator or flag that the stored list is valid, the indicator being checked before the listed is used to start-up the device. If the list is not valid a new merged list is generated and stored. Also disclosed are a computer program and a computing device programmed to execute the method.
