A method of reducing transmit power and peak to average power ratio in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system is disclosed. The method places a symbol of a standard symbol constellation at a zero point while maintaining the minimum inter-symbol distance of the standard symbol constellation. The new constellation is used for the reduction of peak to average power ratio in OFDM systems by the allocation of the zero point to the subcarrier with the lowest reception power. Methods of mapping data bits to a symbol constellation in various different ways to find the mapping that reduces the peak to average power ratio are also disclosed.
