PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an approach that allows for a double-acting, multi-cylinder, thermodynamically resonant, alpha configuration free-piston Stirling system.;SOLUTION: The Stirling system (100) includes an overstroke preventer (122) that controls extent of travel of a piston (102) to prevent undesirable consequences of the travel of the piston (102) beyond predetermined limits. The overstroke preventer (122) involves controlled work extraction out of the Stirling system (100) or controlled work input into the Stirling system (100).
