PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a method in a respiratory technique, which can modify or exclude one or more defect(s), where the demand is increasing.SOLUTION: A method and system for detecting an ineffective effort of a patient being mechanically ventilated by a ventilator includes: (i) monitoring a respiratory flow of air of the patient after the ventilator has cycled; (ii) creating a signal indicative of the flow; (iii) removing artefact from the signal; (iv) monitoring the signal for perturbations; and (v) determining that an ineffective effort has occurred when the perturbation is significant. In the method, the step of removing the artefact from the signal includes: a step of removing a signal indicative of a cardiac vibration; a step of removing the artefact from a signal determines whether cough occurs; and a step of removing a signal indicative of ooze.
