PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization conversion element capable of reducing manufacturing cost, and further to provide a polarization conversion unit, a projection device and a manufacturing method of the polarization conversion element.;SOLUTION: A polarization conversion element 300 according to the present invention comprises: translucent substrates 311; polarization separation sections 312 alternately disposed on boundaries between the translucent substrates 311; optical elements 310 having reflection sections 313 reflecting S-polarized light having been reflected; and retardation plates 320 being disposed on a light emission surface 310E and converting P-polarized light to S-polarized light so as to emit the S-polarized light. The retardation plates 320 includes: base sections 321 bonded to end edge portions of the optical elements 310 along a direction, in which the polarization separation sections 312 and the reflection sections 313 are alternately disposed; and retardation sections 322 extending from the base sections 321 and being disposed at upper regions being the light emission surface 310E of the polarization separation sections 312.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT
