PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a phenyl substitution heterocyclic derivative being a xanthine oxidase inhibitor useful for treating of gout, hyperuricemia or the like or its an intermediate thereof, which is low cost, has a short process, and is efficient.SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing a phenyl substitution heterocyclic derivative or an intermediate thereof comprises as follows. As shown by reaction formula (A), an inexpensive nickel compound is used as a catalyst, and the direct coupling of a phenyl ring of a phenyl derivative, and a C-H bond on a heterocyclic derivative is carried out. The nickel compound is a salt of nickel of a zero valency or nickel of a divalency, especially, the nickel compound desirably is nickel acetate (II), bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene)nickel (II), nickel chloride (II) or a hydrate thereof. Under the reaction, further, a ligand which can coordinate with the nickel compound, especially, 2,2'-bipyridyl desirably exists. Under the reaction, further, a base, especially, tert-butoxy lithium desirably exists.
