PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate complex character string selection processing by a combination of easily creatable commands instead of creation of complex selection processing.SOLUTION: A character string selection device 1 inputs selection target information 9a and command information 9b. The character string selection device 1 has selection range holding means 5 capable of holding plural selection range sets each having zero or more selection range elements. The character string selection device 1 applies selection range generation rules composed of regular expressions to a selection range set based on the selection target information 9a by first selection range generation means 4, thereby generating new selection range sets. The character string selection device 1 performs, by second selection range generation means 6, a set operation on the selection range sets generated by the first selection range generation means 4, thereby generating a new selection range set having desired selection range elements.
