PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface emission laser obtaining laser beams with a larger spot diameter compared with conventional single mode beams and facilitating mode control, and also to provide a manufacturing method of a two-dimensional photonic crystal in the surface emission laser.;SOLUTION: A surface emission laser has an active layer, and a two-dimensional photonic crystal in which media with different refractive indexes are arranged in a two-dimensional period. The laser has a structure, that is to say, that the two-dimensional photonic crystal is provided with a first layer and a second layer having a two-dimensional period structure, the first layer and the second layer are arranged in contact with each other, and the part disturbing a refractive index period of the two-dimensional photonic crystal is formed in the second layer.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
