PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a binder for diatomaceous earth, enabling the diatomaceous earth to be coated well on various kinds of coating objects; to provide a method for producing the binder; to provide a coating material containing the diatomaceous earth and enabling the characteristics of the diatomaceous earth to be exhibited sufficiently; and to provide a method for producing the coating material. PSOLUTION: The binder for the diatomaceous earth comprises water, a main ingredient consisting essentially of silicone-modified acrylic ester-based copolymer, a polycarboxylic acid-based dispersing agent, and a thickener consisting essentially of an acrylic ester-based copolymer. The method for producing the binder for the diatomaceous earth comprises adding the dispersing agent to the water and stirring the resultant mixture, further adding the main ingredient to the obtained mixture, stirring the mixture, adding the thickener to the obtained mixture and stirring the mixture. The coating material containing the diatomaceous earth contains the diatomaceous earth and the binder for the diatomaceous earth. The method for producing the coating material containing the diatomaceous earth comprises mixing the binder for the diatomaceous earth produced by the above procedure with the diatomaceous earth, and stirring the resultant mixture.
