PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining the sphericity of a structure.;SOLUTION: A system (500) for determining sphericity include a computer processor (502) configured to calculate a covariance matrix for a three dimensional model of a structure and calculate a sphericity of the structure using the covariance matrix and a long-axis vector associated with a long axis of the modeled structure. In a certain embodiment, the processor (502) may be configured to calculate the sphericity as a ratio between a determinant of the covariance matrix and a cubed extent of the model in the long-axis direction. In a certain embodiment, the system may include an imaging device (508), such as an ultrasound scanner, for example, configured to capture an image of the structure and acquire a three dimensional model of the structure.
