PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character recognition device for precisely recognizing even characters whose configurations are different from expected configurations, wherein characters are partially invisible, and to provide an appearance inspection device, and a character recognition method.;SOLUTION: The character recognition device 1 has an image obtaining means 2 for obtaining an inspection image obtained by imaging a subject of inspection on which at least one character string is written; a character recognition means 34 for calculating matching degree between the inspection image and a plurality of character patterns read from a character pattern storage means 33, recognizing characters shown by the character pattern that best matches the inspection image among the plurality of character patterns, and obtaining the positions of the recognized characters in the inspection image; a character string information obtaining means 36 for obtaining character string information based on the positional relationship between the plurality of characters recognized; and a determining means 37 for determining that the character string information is correct if the character string information shows a character string that may be written on the subject of inspection, and determining that the character string information is incorrect if the character string cannot be written on the subject of inspection.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
