PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily producing a 3-alkyl-4,4'-biphenol and a mixture of a 3-alkyl-4,4'-biphenol and a 3,3'-dialkyl-4,4'-biphenol useful e.g. as a raw material for synthetic resins having high heat-resistance and good moldability such as a liquid crystalline polyester resin, polyarylate resin, polycarbonate resin and epoxy resin and a raw material for highly functional compounds such as a liquid crystal display element and photoresist on an industrial scale in high purity and yield.;SOLUTION: The objective compound is produced by reacting 4,4'-biphenol with a lower alkyl aldehyde in the presence of a secondary amine to obtain a 3-aminoalkyl-4,4'-biphenol or a mixture of a 3-aminoalkyl-4,4'-biphenol and a 3,3'-di(aminoalkyl)-4,4'-biphenol, and hydrocracking the aminoalkyl group of the mixture in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
