PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 3-aryl-benzofuran-2-one useful for a heat or light stabilizer.;SOLUTION: This production of a 3-aryl-benzofuran-2-one expressed by formula I (wherein general signs are defined as in claim 1) is to hydrocrack a compound expressed by formula V (wherein general signs are defined as in claim I) in the presence of an acid in a water-based solvent. The compound expressed by formula V is a novel compound and is useful as a stabilizer for protecting organic materials, especially polymers and lubricants from degradation caused by oxidation and decompositions generated by heat or lights.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
