PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin that gives a cured product capable of exhibiting high heat resistance though produced using a trialkyl phenol as a raw material phenol, to provide an epoxy resin composition that comprises an epoxy resin produced using the phenol resin as a raw material and to provide processes for producing the phenol resin and for producing the epoxy resin each in an industrially simple and convenient way and in a high yield.;SOLUTION: The phenol resin is a novel novolac type phenol resin produced by reacting a 2,4,6-trialkyl phenol and formalin in the presence of a methane sulfonic acid. The epoxy resin composition comprises a novel novolac type epoxy resin produced by reacting the novel novolac type phenol resin and an epichlorohydrin either as a main agent or as a curing agent.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
