The present invention relates to a hydrometallurgical method for leaching smelting dust with tricarboxylic acid solutions in four stages. The first stage includes leaching followed by a second stage of solid/liquid separation. The "liquid" phase of separation has a relatively high concentration of precious metals (such as copper and zinc) and a relatively low concentration of iron and arsenic. In this third stage, the copper and the zinc separate by means of electro-winning and/or precipitation, to produce cathodes and/or precipitates. Leaching reduces the solid to approximately 10% in weight. The "solid" phase, the fourth stage of the procedure, depending on the content of metals, such as As, Sb and others, can include stabilization and setting of the solid remainder, mixing it with cement and/or lime slurry or, depending on the contents of precious metals (Au, Ag), treating same by mineralogically separating by flotation the precious elements, which return concentrated to a processing plant. The remainder is stabilized with cement, lime slurry or limestone. The process according to the invention is completely environmentally friendly.
