Thin nanostructured layers on the surfaces of nickel or its alloys for the rapid achievement of high values of hydrogen adsorption (H / Ni ~ 0.7) as a result of providing direct metal / gas contact. Said layers are obtained by a method including the step of oxidizing said surfaces, applying a film of an aqueous silicic acid sol thereon, then heating in an oxidizing atmosphere and final activation as a result of reduction in a reducing atmosphere.
