The present invention relates to isolation of a bioactive fraction from fungus Aspergillus elegans (MTCC 5482), Willd., which is endophyte of dicotyledonous plants Asparagus racemosus, Willd., and methods for isolation and screening such strains for pharmaceutical and agricultural potential. The present bioactive fraction is having biological activity as antimicrobial and anti-cancer agent. The present invention further relates to compositions of such compounds and methods of fermentation, extraction, purification and related bioassay against pathogenic fungi and bacteria.
