An object is to suppress deterioration of the operational efficiency of a water treatent apparatus by performing an effcient membrane separation method by suppressing deterioration of the permeation performance of hollow fiber membranes. Provided is a hollow fiber membrane module that includes hollow fiber membranes, a fixing member for fixing lower ends of the hollow fiber membranes to have the hollow fiber membranes vertically extending in water and render membrane separation practicable, and a diffusion mechanism for generating gas bubbles on the lower end side of the hollow fiber membranes so as to diffuse gas over the vertically extending hollow fiber membranes, wherein the diffusion mechanism is structured so that the amount of gas bubbles generated from a center area of the region where the hollow fiber membranes are disposed is greater than the amount of gas bubbles generated from the area outside of the center area.
