The present invention relates to rapid synthesis of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) using waste iron ore tailings (IOT), a natural waste that is generated in the iron ore beneficiation plants and poses serious environmental concern for its disposal. Well dispersed MNPs (3-20 nm) can be synthesised by using readily available IOT as the ferric source along with reagent grade ferrous salts in which the size of the of MNPs can be controlled by use different surfactants. The MNPs syntheised by this method exhibits supermagnetic and good adsorption characteristics. These materials can efficiently removes organic dyes and anionic species like phosphate, chromate etc. from their aqueous solutions within a short period and can find large scale applications in treatment of wastewaters.
