The present invention relates to wireless communications and is particularly applicable to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based 4th generation (4G) mobile cellular communication system receivers based on standards like, but not limited to, Long Term Evolution (LTE) and World-wide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX). A novel channel response estimation improvisation method is presented which cleanses the estimated channel response and aids the equalizer in efficiently compensating for undesirable effects on received radio signals introduced by the propagation medium. The channel frequency response estimation is improved dramatically by eliminating taps in the leaked and contaminated time domain Channel Impulse Response (CIR), which are deemed unfit for estimation. Subsequently, an equalizer corrects the distorted received signal by making use of the improved CIR and compensating for channel induced distortions by multiplying the received data with a complex corrective signal.
