The present invention provides a process for preparation of monoisoamyl dimercaptosuccinic acid (MiADMSA) by reacting meso 2,3- dimecapstosuccinic acid (DMSA) with isoamyl alcohol in the presence of a catalyst at a suitable temperature to obtain monoisoamyl dimercaptosuccinic acid. The process of the present invention uses less amount of isoamyl alcohol and catalyst which considerably reduces the cost of production. Another feature of the present invention is that the MiADMSA produced by the process of invention is highly pure with very low odor. MiADMSA is used in heavy metal toxicity treatment or preparation of a medicament for heavy metal poisoning.
