The present invention relates to the production of staple fibers consisting of spun filaments (2) which are produced according to the lyocell method from a spinning solution containing water, cellulose and tertiary amine oxide. According to the invention the tertiary amine oxide is not washed out of the spun filaments (2) prior to cutting by cutting means (9). The loop strength can be enhanced with this measure. To be more specific, in the method and the device according to the invention, loop strengths can be achieved in lyocell staple fibers of at least 15 cN/tex, partially even at least 20 cN/tex. (Fig. 1)
