The process of the present invention allows light hydrocarbons of 3 to 6 carbon atoms to be directly dehydrogenated, especially n-pentene and i-pentene, over catalysts based on activated carbon. The process performs an uninterrupted operation of the catalytic dehydrogenation, since it has a couple of converters connected in parallel. The process is operated close to the atmospheric pressure at temperatures of from about 600°C to about 4500°C and produces a main outlet stream that contains a mixture of paraffins and olefins.
