Disclosed is a food supplement comprising: I. between 10 and 90 wt.% of a soluble fibre comprising at least 30 wt.% of galactooligosaccharides having a chain length of 3-10 anhydromonose units; and II. 90-10 wt.% of ribose. Also disclosed is the use of a soluble dietary fibre for preparing a nutritional or pharmaceutical composition for the treatment or reduction of the incidence of muscle wasting and/or chronic muscle wasting and/or sarcopenia, the dietary fibre comprising at least 30 wt.% of galactooligosaccharides having a chain length of 3-10 anhydromonose units.
