Disclosed is a method for classifying individuals suffering from stable coronary artery disease caused by atherosclerosis according to a prognosis of their survival, said method comprising: measuring the level of YKL-40 in a biological sample from an individual, and comparing the measured level to a reference level of YKL-40, wherein the reference level is a cut-off value of 80 µg/l; wherein the higher the level of YKL- 40, the shorter is the prognosis for survival of the individual. Further disclosed is a method for monitoring the health state of an individual suffering from heart disease caused by atherosclerosis in relation to a prognosis of their survival, said method comprising: measuring the level of YKL-40 in a biological sample from said individual; and comparing the measured level to a reference level of YKL-40, wherein the reference level is a cut-off value of 80 µg/l; wherein the higher the level of YKL-40, the shorter is the prognosis for survival of the individual.
