An aircraft taxiing system for use while the plane is on the ground or airport runway. A separate engine (70) is located in the tail section of the fuselage (60), mounted so that the aircraft horizontal tail control stabilisers (69) and vertical tail control surface (68). The engine can be a turbine. The taxi thrust system has a maximum rated thrust output not exceeding 15% of the total take-off thrust of the flight engines. The weight of the taxi engines does not exceed 10% of the flight engine weight. The taxiing engine provides thrust substantially along the axis of the airplane body to move the aircraft forward. The engine contains a rotationally movable vane (80) to deflect the jet thrust stream between an azimuth angle (82) to assist steering. The taxi engine is not used when the aeroplane is taking off, in flight or landing, the flight engines are not used for taxiing the aircraft.
