The method involves simulating traffic flow along a road section (S12) using a traffic model (VM). Model-measurement data (zi', bi') is generated based on inflowing model-traffic flow (Zzu'). The model-traffic flow is varied with respect to temporal distribution of oncoming model-vehicles, and is optimized in terms of consistency of the generated model-measurement data with corresponding measurement data (zi, bi) e.g. counter value, detected by a vehicle detector (30). Traffic information (VI) is determined from a simulated model-traffic flow resulting from the optimized model traffic flow. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a traffic computer for determining traffic information for a road section of a road network, comprising a program code containing control commands (2) a machine-readable program code for a traffic computer, comprising control commands (3) a storage medium having a program with a set of instructions for determining traffic information for a road section of a road network.
