The separating apparatus has an extractor slide (5) which is shiftable longitudinally on a base (18) rearward of a frame (8). A gripper (6) on the slide is extendable past the frame to grasp the end of the mandrel (1) of a shell (2) on a holder. The slide is shifted axially away from the frame while the gripper grasps the mandrel end and while the stripper jaws are in inner positions to brace the shell axially through the jaws against the frame and pull the mandrel out of the shell.
