A method for the initial access of a communication station in a spread spectrum communication system, said method comprising: randomly selecting (178) an access channel between a plurality of access channels in said spread spectrum communication system; sending (192) a plurality of probes, separated by predetermined waiting periods, through said access channel, to said communication station, wherein said plurality of probes is sent as a first sequence (122) of probes, and send successively then other sequences (124, 126) of probes with other probes to said communication station, wherein each of said probe sequences is sent randomly through one of said access channels; and terminating (200) said initial access when a confirmation is received from said communication station within one of said waiting periods following any of said probes in any of said probe sequences.
