A hardware module (20-24) for an Intelligent Electronic Device IED, comprising a circuit board (24a), electronic components mounted on the circuit board, and a connector of the rear panel (24b) for engagement in a groove ( 1a-1f) of a rear panel (1) of the IED, the module (20 being adapted - 24) to receive, over a serial bus back panel, and to process a signal from a source module (22; 23) of IED, wherein the module (20-24) comprises a source selector (3) which is adapted to determine whether an adjacent module engages the nearest slot (1c; 1e) of the rear panel and, if so, to selecting the module (23) as the source module and, if not, to select a module (22) which engages adjacent the next slot (1d) nearest the rear panel as the source module.
