A process for preparing a poly (trimethylene ether trimethylene carbonate) diol of structure wherein z is an integer from 1 to 10; n is an integer of 2 to 100; and each R is independently selected from the group consisting of H, C1-C20 alkyl, cyclic C3-C20, aryl C5-C25, alkaryl C6-C20 aryl C6-C20, and wherein each R substituent can optionally form a C3 group C8 cyclic structural with adjacent R substituents; the process comprising: contacting trimethylene carbonate or trimethylene carbonate R-substituted resin copolymer ion exchange tetrafluoroethylene / perfluoro (4-methyl-June 3-dioxa-7-octene-1sulfónico acid) as catalyst a temperature higher than the melting point of trimethylene carbonate or trimethylene carbonate R-substituted, to form a mixture comprising an oligomeric composition poly (trimethylene ether trimethylene carbonate) diol.
