Procedure for reproducing multimedia image data and text-based subtitle data (120) recorded on a storage medium to display subtitles on an image based on the multimedia image data, the procedure comprising the following steps: reading the data from text-based subtitles (120), which include dialogue information (820) and a set of styles, characterized in that: the dialogue information (820) comprises text information (534), reference style information (532) and partial style information (536), and the style set comprises a plurality of style information (810) and information (830) indicating whether a reproduction apparatus is allowed to apply a predetermined style information, which is separate from the style information defined by the manufacturer of the storage medium, to the dialog information (820); apply a style information from the plurality of style information (512, 522) to the text information (534), using the reference style information (532) indicating a style information that is to be applied to the text information (534) among the plurality of style information (512, 522), and apply the partial style information (536) to a part of the text information (534); and determining whether the reproduction apparatus is allowed to apply the predetermined style information using the information (830).
