The bacteriolytic effect of a bacterial cell wall lytic enzyme can be increased by the addition of a surfactant to the enzyme. As a result, the time required for the lysis of a cariogenic bacterium with a bacterial cell wall lytic enzyme can be shortened, and the practical utility of a bacterial cell wall lytic enzyme (e.g., automutanolysin) as a prophylactic or therapeutic agent for dental caries can be improved.
